Rename files and sort them into folders with AI

Zush reads file content to create searchable names on Mac and Windows. Enable AI folder sorting (beta) to group files automatically or follow your plain-language instructions. Review the suggested names and folders before applying. Leave sorting off to keep the original locations.

  1. Choose one Downloads or client folder and decide which details you will search for later, such as project, document type, and date. Save those fields as a Template.
  2. Turn on Sort. Leave Folder rules empty for Auto, or describe the grouping, such as “Group invoices by company and receipts by month.” Choose a destination or keep the original folder.
  3. Review the proposed names and folders, then apply. After the result is reliable, assign the Template to folder monitoring so new files are named and sorted as they arrive.

Illustrative path: Clients is the chosen destination, Acme is the folder AI proposed from a rule such as “Group client documents by company.” Review every proposed folder before applying.

AI folder sorting is in beta and creates one level of folders inside the destination per batch. Zush does not replace a search database or a document-management system. Use rename history to restore names when needed.

Cloud AI

Goes through our relay to a commercial AI provider, under their standard API terms. The relay exists so the API key can’t be pulled out of the app.

Bring Your Own Key

Connect your own API key from Gemini, OpenRouter, OpenAI, or Claude for cloud renames; FREE includes 50 across all modes and PRO is unlimited. Keys are stored locally in secure platform storage.

Private Local AI Options

Keep supported analysis on your device with LM Studio or Ollama. Each local mode works offline after setup.

Watch one or multiple folders — including iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive folders. Zush runs in the background and processes new files automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AI file organizer?

An AI file organizer reads what each file contains and turns that into clean, searchable filenames and consistent naming conventions. Instead of sorting by pattern rules alone, Zush analyzes screenshots, PDFs, photos, documents, videos, audio, and design files, then names each one by its content so Finder, Spotlight, and Windows Search can actually find it.

How is an AI file organizer different from an AI file sorter?

An AI file sorter groups files into folders based on content; an AI file renamer gives each file a descriptive name. Zush combines both in one reviewed batch: Auto mode suggests groups, or you can describe your own folder rules in plain language.

Is Zush AI file and folder naming software?

Yes. Zush creates content-aware filenames on Mac and Windows. AI folder sorting (beta) also suggests folder names and moves files into those groups. Use Auto mode or write a prompt such as “Group invoices by company and receipts by month.” You can reuse suitable existing folders or choose a destination. This does not bulk-rename existing folders.

Can Zush automatically organize my Downloads folder?

Yes. Point folder monitoring at Downloads and Zush will name new screenshots, invoices, receipts, and exports by content as they land, using the template you choose. Every change stays in rename history, so you can undo any batch.

Does the AI file organizer work on both Mac and Windows?

Yes. Zush has a native Mac app (macOS 15+) and a Windows build in the Microsoft Store. Both support content-aware naming, templates, Naming Blocks, folder monitoring, and undo history. Folder sorting supports automatic grouping or custom instructions and a destination folder.

Is my data private when AI organizes my files?

You choose the mode: managed Cloud AI, BYOK with your own provider key, LM Studio or Ollama so supported analysis stays on your device. Files remain on your disk; users can optionally move them into AI-suggested folders.
